The Zakat System: An Alternative Solution to Contemporary Social Crises
Keywords:

Zakat is more than a pillar of faith; it is a comprehensive socio-economic framework designed to foster equitable wealth distribution and social justice. This study explores the multifaceted dimensions of Zakat, moving beyond its ritualistic interpretation to highlight its role as a dynamic economic engine. By discouraging the hoarding of capital and encouraging the "velocity of money," Zakat transforms stagnant wealth into a circulating force that fuels aggregate demand and stimulates overall productivity. Drawing upon classical Islamic scholarship, such as Imam al-Ghazali’s emphasis on spiritual ethics and Shah Waliullah’s concept of social solidarity, the article posits that Zakat serves as a unique "socio-spiritual" remedy for class-based societal divisions. In the modern era, the research emphasizes the necessity of institutionalizing Zakat to achieve broader development objectives, including the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It further evaluates how emerging financial technologies like Blockchain and FinTech can revolutionize Zakat administration by enhancing transparency, reducing administrative leakages, and ensuring the direct transfer of funds to the needy. Unlike secular tax systems, Zakat creates a voluntary spiritual obligation that significantly mitigates the issues of tax evasion. Furthermore, the study presents Zakat as a viable, interest-free alternative to the exploitative debt-based global financial order, offering a "charity-based" model for international welfare. Ultimately, the article concludes that a well-organized, institutionalized Zakat system provides a robust social safety net, mitigates inflationary pressures, and guarantees economic dignity and empowerment for the marginalized segments of society.
